For example, the Navy ROTC society will be resetting and repairing headstones and doing general cleaning of a local cemetery that includes graves from veterans who served as far back as the Revolutionary War. The New York City club will be shelving books at a new public school in the Bronx. We look forward to your participation.
In addition to these events, all alumni and friends are encouraged to change their Facebook profile photos to the Block “O” for the day. You can find this logo at http://osu.edu/connect/images/blockO.jpg. Right-click and choose “save as” to save to your computer. Then upload to Facebook, and choose “Make profile picture.”
How to set effective goals
Achieving personal or professional goals begins with setting effective goals at the beginning. Graham Jones, Ph.D., in his 2009 book, Thriving on Pressure: Mental Toughness for Real Leaders, says that effective goals are:
Internalized. It does not matter who has set your goals, you have to own and commit to them.
Specific. They are clear and unambiguous so it is obvious when they have been achieved.
In your control. Their achievement should be attainable through your own efforts.
Reviewed regularly. Regular reviews of progress toward them should be included in the planning process.
Energizing. They should excite and energize you by being challenging. They are just about achievable, but should also create a level of uncertainty that sustains your motivation, focus, and effort.
Documented. Recording progress toward goals provides a continual reminder of commitments, which can be important when things are tough.

higher education, died July 27 following an extended illness. He was 84. An advocate

Princeton
Review ranks Ohio State a top Midwestern school and best value college
The annual
Princeton Review college rankings recognize Ohio State as one of the top 50 Best
Value Public Colleges for 2011, and one of the Best Midwestern Colleges. Best Value
Colleges are selected for their excellent academics, low sticker price, and/or generous
financial aid. The publication selects Best Midwestern Colleges that it feels stand
out within each region. The publication also notes Ohio State’s extracurricular offerings:

Ohio State’s
Buckeye Bullet Aims to Hit 400 mph at Bonneville
After setting a 300+ mph land-speed
record for fuel cell cars in 2009 and following it up with a 300+ mph record for
electric vehicles at Bonneville last summer, it seems that the engineering students
behind Ohio State’s Buckeye Bullet land speed record car issued a press release,
then promptly got back to work. The team isn’t working on improving their 300 mph
Bullet, however. Instead, they’ll be building an all-new machine they’re convinced
will hit 400 mph. http://gas2.org/2011/08/07/ohios-buckeye-bullet-aims-to-hit-400-mph-at-bonneville/
RESEARCH NEWS
One tiny electron could be key to future drugs that repair sunburn
Researchers
who have been working for nearly a decade to piece together the process by which
an enzyme repairs sun-damaged DNA have finally witnessed the entire process in full
detail in the laboratory. What they saw contradicts fundamental notions of how key
biological molecules break up during the repair of sunburn – and that knowledge could
someday lead to drugs or even lotions that could heal sunburn in humans. http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/sunrepdna.htm
COPD patients with sense of humor feel better, but laughter may be bad for lungs
Having
a sense of humor is associated with improved emotional functioning and an enhanced
quality of life among patients with a chronic lung illness, but the actual act of
laughing out loud can reduce lung function, at least in the short term, research
suggests. The study evaluated humor and laughter in patients with chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, or COPD. Participants who exhibited a greater sense of humor were
more likely to report fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety and better quality
of life, and tended to report that they had experienced fewer respiratory illnesses
in the month before the study. http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/copdhumor.htm
Even science Nobel Laureates find acceptance isn’t a given, study finds
The path of success for Nobel Prize laureates in the sciences isn’t a straight shot from obscurity to never-ending scientific superstardom, a new study reveals. Instead, many laureates see their Nobel-winning idea grow in acceptance from their first related scientific article to their most successful publication. But their later work related to the Nobel idea gains less acceptance, and many times is no more accepted by the scientific community than their very first efforts. http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/nobellaureates.htm
ATHLETICS NEWS
Ohio Stadium gets greener with zero waste initiative
The largest stadium in the world to attempt such a venture, Ohio State will continue to reduce its negative environmental impact by transitioning Ohio Stadium toward zero waste on football game days this fall. The term “zero waste” refers to a 90 percent rate of diversion of trash from landfills, which is achieved by recycling and composting. In order to achieve the goal of 90 percent diversion, all items purchased inside Ohio Stadium will be either recyclable or compostable. This means there will be no trash bins needed; any trash produced will be recycled, moving the stadium toward zero waste. www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/genrel/081211aaa.html
Former women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer to be inducted into basketball HOF
Former Ohio State and current Stanford women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer will be one of 10 individuals inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's Class of 2011 this weekend in Springfield, Mass. At Ohio State, VanDerveer went 110-37 from 1980-85, which included four 20-win seasons, three Big Ten championships, and multiple appearances in the NCAA tournament. Following the 1984-85 campaign, in which she led the Buckeyes to a 28-3 record and the Elite Eight, VanDerveer arrived at Stanford, where she turned around the Cardinal program. www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/081011aaa.html
J.B. Shuck Makes Major League Baseball Debut
Former Ohio State outfielder/pitcher J.B. Shuck made his Major League debut for the Houston Astros on Aug. 5, shortly after receiving the call-up from Triple-A Oklahoma City. He becomes the fifth former Buckeye to appear in a big-league game this season. The outfielder came off the bench to play right field, going 1-for-2 with a stolen base. For the series against Milwaukee, Shuck went 2-for-6 with two walks and a stolen base, and made his first career start Aug. 7. www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/080811aaf.html
